Working and claiming PIP was created by sharon
Hi,

Can anyone help with this question.

My daughter has a life threatening illness, chronic fatigue, learning and mental health difficulties, she is on the higher rate PIP. However, she has applied for a position at her old MLD school as a teaching assistant, and was successful. However, she did not realise it was full-time (32 hours) and is uncertain if she would be able to maintain the position, but she still wants to try and give it a go.

Will this have an impact on her PIP award, plus how or when do I inform DWP about this change. She has not been given a start date as yet.

Thank you

Hi Sharon

Some claimants work and successfully claim PIP. When a claimant works, the issue is whether the criteria for which they received PIP are still relevant. For example, if your daughter has a mobility award partly because of her chronic fatigue, is this going to be an issue as a teaching assistant? I'm not suggesting her chronic fatigue will disappear - but the DWP would undoubtedly question the increased activity. If she is going to be working 32 hrs a week, they would likely say that her mental health difficulties have also improved. Only you can answer these questions, but if there has been an improvement (e.g. enough to work), you should tell the DWP immediately. Unfortunately, the system isn't set up to see how people get on with a change. If she still needs help, they may well want to reassess her. Make sure that you have been through the PIP guide and if she still needs as much support/ just different, make sure you are ready before you contact them.

Hi sharon, just a different angle thought. Could your daughter ask the school to change the post into a job share as a 'reasonable adjustment' to her disabilities? It might then be easier to manage, less of a problematic issue for PIP and most important, still give her the self respect of working at a rewarding job. There was lots about asking employers for part time work on 'Woman's Hour' the other day
