14.10.26  Are ADHD, autism, anxiety and depression cost-free conditions?

There are growing signs of a DWP push to claim that conditions like ADHD, autism, anxiety and depression are less likely to lead to significant additional costs and, therefore, should be treated differently by the benefits system. In order to challenge this argument, we’d like to hear about the extra costs you face if you live with one of these conditions, or care for someone who does.

12.10.26  Fonagy deals severe blow to Timms and Milburn

The Fonagy review has dealt a severe blow to arguments for cutting benefits on the grounds that autism, ADHD, anxiety and depression are being widely overdiagnosed, particularly among young people. It also quashes the claim that cutting benefits is a helpful intervention in claimants’ lives.

06.10.26  Right now is the time to challenge Timms review

Benefits and Work is urging readers to begin challenging the Timms review right now, rather than waiting until its final report is published.  We’re providing some suggestions about issues you can raise with your MP.

04.10.26  Call for savage child DLA cuts by Timms review steering group member

Jean-André Prager, a member of the Timms review steering group, is the leading author of a new report calling for extreme cuts to child DLA for mental health, learning difficulties and neurodevelopmental conditions.

01.10.26  Key disability benefit for young people may be axed under major welfare changes

The Guardian reports that the government is considering removing the health element of universal credit for claimants under 25, a new system to replace PIP and cuts to Motability.

28.09.26 One short call could prevent PIP claims proceeding

A Benefits and Work reader attending a Timms review workshop has been told by a panel member that a short triage call will decide whether claimants are sent a PIP2 claim form or put on a separate assessment route with no cash award at the end of it.  The workshops, part of a £1 million co-production contract, have been criticised for their lack of detailed information and for using tokens and a sheet of coloured paper to get attendees’ feedback.

17.09.26 Cardiff in-person Timms workshop moved online over protest fears

The Cardiff Timms review workshop due to be held on Friday 25 September has been moved online due to fears about protest and disruption.

17.09.26 Only one in ten readers supports costs-based PIP awards

Benefits and Work readers have come out overwhelmingly against the Timms review “emerging recommendation” that personal independence payment (PIP) awards should be linked to costs.

15.09.26 Tell us if you support PIP awards based on disability costs

As carefully controlled workshops to justify using costs to determine PIP awards are launched today by the Timms review, Benefits and Work is  asking readers to give their opinion.   We want you to take a few seconds to answer a single question and, if you wish, make some comments afterwards.  Whatever happens, Timms should not be the only source of feedback on this idea.

12.09.26 ‘Sham’ Timms review protests planned in Wales

Disabled claimants will be protesting against the ‘sham’ Timms review in Wales when carefully managed workshops are held there later this month.

DPAC Cymru are organising the events in protest against the failure of the review to genuinely consult with disabled claimants.  They argue that:

“The UK Government promised that the review would be 'co-produced' with Disabled people. Instead, it is an undemocratic and top-down review being used to justify cuts, particularly for young Disabled people.”

10.09.26 Timms review revives Tory plan for PIP awards based on costs not difficulties

The Timms review has finally revealed its plans for a radical reform of personal independence payment (PIP) in which awards will be based on additional costs for items such as equipment, bedding and transport.  The proposals bear a remarkable similarity to those included in the infamous Conservative Green Paper published in 2024.
