ESA, UC and Housing Benefit was created by salhepple
Hello,

I can't find an answer to this question in the forum, so I hope you can answer it for me.

I have been in receipt of ESA, PIP and Housing Benefit (+Council Tax benefit) for 6 years - I reached pension age on December 7th 2022 and am now in receipt of a state pension. My ESA ended when I reached pension age, though the council are still paying my Housing Benefit. I really need to keep my HB, but I now read online that I am no longer entitled to HB once ESA is over, and need to apply for Universal Credit in order be entitled to it. Is this the case? I have not applied for UC yet - and am worried that I should have applied for it before I reached pension age.

BTW, I live alone in a one bed flat which is shared ownership with rent+service charge of £512 pcm. I'm getting the max amount of state pension.

Can you enlighten me about this and what I now need to do to keep getting my Housing Benefit?
Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Sally H.

I'm sorry but we don't deal with Housing Benefit on the forum, I would advise you to seek help from a local Welfare Rights agency, such as Citizens Advice.

Hi salhepple

If you were in receipt of UC, when you retired you would have to apply for Housing Benefit, as you are already in receipt of Housing Benefit, then you will stay on Housing Benefit.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to claim Pension Credit; www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility, if eligible you can ask for your GPC to be back dated to 7th December 2022.

As Gordon has stated you need to contact your local Welfare Rights Organisation, who all your circumstances into consideration and give you accurate advice; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk
