Support Group ESA was created by crann1
I am in the support group ESA which I believe is contributions based and non means tested. The government web site states that ordinary ESA will be paid for 365 days and that there is no limit to the length of time it will be paid to those in the support group. Does this mean that support group ESA recipients will receive ESA beyond the retirement age of 66 or does the rule that it finishes at retirement also apply to those in the support group ESA. Also I have a small pension which I must draw down at 65. I am wondering if I take this pension will it have the effect of reducing my ESA. Therefore would it better to defer this pension until I am 66 when the state pension kicks in and my ESA is likely to end.
Thank you for your help

Hi crann1
Thank you for the questions I will try and answer them in turn.
1) Does this mean that support group ESA recipients will receive ESA beyond the retirement age of 66 or does the rule that it finishes at retirement also apply to those in the support group ESA
ESA, no matter which type you receive or if you are in the support group will stop when you reach State Pension age.
2) I have a small pension which I must draw down at 65. I am wondering if I take this pension will it have the effect of reducing my ESA
Whether it will affect your ESA will depend on the type of ESA you receive, how you take the pension and how much it is?
If you are only receiving Contribution Based ESA then a lump sum will not affect your ESA but a regular payment will. If the pension is more then £85/week then there will be a £1/week deduction for every £2 in excess of the £85.
If you are receiving any Income Related ESA, either in part or in whole, then it will affect your ESA.
We cannot give you advice about whether or to defer a pension as we do not hold a licence, you would need to speak to a Independant Financial Adviser or Pension Wise.
