Hi

I am mum of 18 yr old son who has pip phone assessment next Tuesday morning , however I’m needing to act as his advocate / representative , since he is not able to cope with a pip interrogation .

He presently has a diagnosis of eds3 & epilepsy

And awaiting assessment for autism ( Asperger’s ) pda and adhd .

I’m am wondering if to request a paper based assessment because of the communication differences I have .

I have Asperger’s and I can explain why it is not possible to process any questions to provide answers on the spot in pip phone assessments etc .

My son has already given his consent for me to act on his behalf with the gp and uni ( apt with uni disability service next week also .

What might be the best way to go about this ?

Hi Pi

I'm slightly concerned that you have left this so late. At this late stage, you may not be able to get a change. You will need to ring IAS (the number should be on the letter you received about the assessment) and ask them if your son could have a paper-based assessment. It's unclear from your post whether you are his official advocate as far as the DWP are concerned. If you're not, as he's 18, they may try and insist that they speak to him. He would then have to request a paper-based assessment. (They don't have to agree to one). If they insist on keeping the appointment, you can cancel it, but if they offer you a second date, you would have to keep the appointment.

If you are his official advocate - tell them that you are unable to do a telephone assessment on his behalf because of your own difficulties and see what they say.

Good luck
