supporting evidence: symptom diary?

supporting evidence: symptom diary? was created by Times Table
I have a question about gathering supporting evidence for when PIP - now ADP - is reviewed. Other than getting evidence from health professionals, there is also the idea of keeping a record of symptoms and their effect over the course of a week or two, and submitting that as well.

I wonder if anyone has any experience which might indicate whether this would be worthwhile:

would such a 'symptom diary' be accepted as evidence?
would it be given any real weight by those reviewing it? (I'm not sure if those undertaking reviews would give any credence to evidence compiled by the claimant themselves - ?) ...
and if it is worthwhile, what sort of length of time should it cover?

Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can offer.

Hi Times Table

Some members have kept a diary and definitely found it has helped their case when applying for PIP. Hopefully, someone will come here and give an example of their recent experience. I advise looking at the examples and making sure you note difficulties, not just symptoms. Eg: "Was unable to dress again today because of severe arthritic pain" rather than "pain in my fingers'. or "Unable to talk to CPN because of severe depression" rather than 'felt miserable'. You don't have to write reams in the diary -just give a picture of how your medical condition/s impacts on your daily living and mobility.

Hi Times Table, surprisingly for our daughter they have twice, and more so the more recent occasion, placed lots of weight on a diary. The second one was composed by me [Mum]. I tried to call or text her most days - she has Chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression etc. Then I created a table in Libre Office Writer with columns for date, call or text, [noting if topic was important], response or none, comments about the meaning. I went back through my phone and filled it all in. So if she did not reply for days, I commented it showed she was depressed. That kind of thing.
This is particularly useful when, as for so many with chronic conditions, the doctors have all discharged you from their clinics [ie given up on you!] because they have no further treatments to try. That means you don't have up to date clinic letters, new prescriptions etc. So do try the diary.
Best wishes,
Denby

Hi,
I provided a 2 week diary with my application, but whether it carried any weight I can`t say, but I did get enhanced for Daily Living.

I covered getting out of bed and the challenge at getting dressed : I have a spinal condition and it can take a few minutes just to put boxers & leggings on. I described if I was in pain or extremely stiff.
I covered meal times and whether or not I ate because of pain or lethargy caused by the pain : I stated the sort of meal I ate and how I made it, or not at all if that was the case.
I covered hygiene and how I wouldn`t / don`t shower for days but have bird baths (sink wash) because of stiffness and / or pain. I included any aids that I used (grab bar / towel rail etc).
I covered going to the toilet and how it can be a very slow action getting there; I also mentioned a grab bar I had installed to help me sit on the toilet and to stand up after. I can`t always move that fast, so I covered an "accident (filled my pants / followed through)" I had when trying to get to the toilet. It wasn`t just the accident, but the distress at having to clean myself up and anything that got on to the carpet.
I described how I no longer buy newspapers, but instead use my laptop so that I can expand the page to better read the article.
I covered how and when I took medication and aids for that (dosette box and mobile phone to remind me).
I covered what I did on a daily basis about going out; most days I didn`t because of the pain / stiffness / frame of mind.

I won`t continue because I`m sure this will have given you a good idea.
What I will say is..... no matter how embarrassing an event is, put it in your diary.
You`ll be surprised by how much your condition is having an effect on your life when you do a diary.

Hope this helps,
Andy
