Moving house to a different authority on ESA was created by Agis
Hello, I might be moving house to a different authority and I am on ESA support group. I am aware I would need to change over to Universal Credit? If on ESA support group would I need to claim Universal Credit housing component and inform Universal Credit that I am in a support group?

Hi Agis
You have to be careful when you move local authority and you need to claim help with your rent.
You have to get the timing right or you will loose over £1k in benefits if there is a break in you claiming ESA and claiming UC. As you have stated you are in the support group, when you apply for UC providing there is no break in your claim not even one day, then you should get the LCWRA element, quite often you are told you need a fit note but this is not true.
I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation to get the timing right; advicelocal.uk

What is a 'break in a claim'?

Hi Agis
A break in a claim is when one claim ends and a new claim is made, for example mixed aged couple on ESA in the support group, when the eldest of a couple reaches state pension age their ESA claim will end, if they receive HB that will also end. If they have not sort advice first and claim UC after SP age then they would have to apply for LCWRA from the start and then go through the assessment phase rather than getting LCWRA straight away.
Mixed aged couples need to plan before the eldest of a couple reaches state pension age.
