PIP Moving around and distance dependant on pain?

Moving around

Under reg 4, I understand you must meet all of the 4 criteria, Safety, Reasonable time, acceptable standard and repetition.

Should you detail how you meet each criterion in the PIP application?

How is the distance you can walk calculated. For example, if you can walk 200 metres, but this takes you more than double the time of any non-disabled person, and you are in significant discomfort whilst walking from within the 20 metres, but you continue to walk very slowly though the pain and walk further, should you put 20 metres or 200 metres.

It seems unfair if you push yourself to move though pain that you should be penalised for it.

Some clarity would be much appreciated.

I also note there was a case where a PIP claimant detailing that they used a bed as an aid for dressing, am I correct in thinking this was not allowed?

Hi AndreaC,
This post seems to mirror another post which both myself and BIS have responded to already.
As for the bed as an aid, yes this was disallowed. The rationale is that most of the population will sit down yo put on socks or trousers. Many of these people are not disabled. It is just such a common thing it won't count. However the legal case didn't rule out the use of a bed if there was something more than just using it as a seat albeit it is hard to perceive what that might comprise!
Remember that if you do need to sit to dress, think why this is- breathlessness, pain, safety, inability to bend etc may all suggest physical help or another aid should be used, such as a sock puller or human. Maybe think a bit outside the box?

I hope this helps.

Hello LL26

I was allowed 2 points for use of bed as an aid in my PIP review, awarded Autumn 2022.

I don't sit on it to dress or undress as I can't bend like that.
Instead, I have to stand and use the weight, stability & tall posts/footboard of the iron bedstead to lean against and cling on to with one free hand.

Hope this clarifies a different way of using a bed to dress/undress.
