Pending Tribunal and articulation was created by Anita
Hello
I am waiting for a tribunal date. My social prescriber, who is coming with me and completed the tribunal forms has said that I should play down my presentation. Suggesting I should be in mismatched clothes and I should not present as articulate. She says that the board are looking for a particular presenting person. Is this the case?

I have mobility issues, my main reason for going through this process is that I have Complex PTSD which not many of these HP know much about and I feel is not being taken seriously. I do forget things, I'm not safe to cook food, I will walk away from the kitchen and forget I've put something in the stove, one time I burnt a tea towel because i forget to turnoff the gas, luckily the sink was near the cooker.

My concern is that I will be seen as too well spoken and coherent. This in turn will override my claim that i get confused and anxious with new people and surroundings. I get brain fogs and struggle to comprehend difficult things, spoken or written. Oh, I'm also slightly dyslectic. My thoughts are all over the place. I can speak though.

Thank you.

Hi Anita

I always tell claimants not to dress or put on make up as it will go against you, also not to take additional medication to help cope with the situation, you should always take your normal prescribed medication.

I told one claim to come in her everyday clothes, so she turned up in her onesie.

I will say that most appeals that I have done this year is by telephone, if you do have a telephone assessment do not take any additional meds to help you cope, if you start getting stressed the Tribunal will hear it in your voice.

Quite often a phone tribunal will go by a good submission and supporting evidence.

Hi Anita,
To add to Gary's reply...
Do whatever you normally do on the day before. So do the shopping if it is shopping day, go for a walk with the dog etc.
If you do everything you usually do, or might do if say, the weather is nice, you will appear as yourself. If the walk etc makes you tired then that will naturally come across. The danger is that you can easily think that by resting up you will be better able to cope with the hearing however the real possibility is that you will come across as "normal" , rather than the tired, fatigued person that you usually are.
If your claim form suggests you don't wash or eg brush your hair then if you don't feel like doing it on the tribunal then don't!
I suspect that although tribunal hearings are low key you will still feel nervous and anxious and this should come across. It is a negative process but you need to 'sell' your disabilities to the panel. Tell it exactly how it is, don't say you manage, explain the struggles you have however stupid or embarrassing these might make you feel.
Good luck.
