DLA to Pip was created by francis
Dear moderators' I am 66 & will be 67 this May, I am receiving DLA high rate mobility & low rate care an indefinite award.
I have not received any request/letter yet to apply for PIP from the DWP?
Yes, I understand that I will have to apply for PIP to continue to receive disability benefits for my age group. I am happy to leave as is at present, mainly to avoid the obvious hassle, but at the same time do not want to miss the opportunity to apply for PIP & miss the boat.
Therefore, do I wait until the DWP contact me? or apply for PIP?
I do believe that I have read somewhere? that the DWP has extended the time/age for application for DLA to PIP for my age group?
However, I cannot find that information to correctly identify that is the case.
Please can you assist with said information & of course your valuable advice? I have been a member since 2011, you are a great help.
Many thanks, francis.

Hi francis
You have not missed the boat, for DLA claimants born after 08/04/1948 you will be assessed for PIP at some stage, at the moment the move has been put on halt. When it re-starts it will be in our newsletter.
If your health has declined then you can contact DWP and inform DWP of a change in your circumstances.
Remember, PIP is substantially different from DLA and the criteria are stricter. PIP was engineered to be more difficult to award than DLA and many DLA claimants will receive reduced awards or even no award at all on transfer.
DLA looks at generic care needs in regard to bodily functions, PIP looks at the claimant's specific ability to carry out an activity such as eating.
DLA was awarded because the claimant needed an amount of care (in time) during the day, the night of both, to help them with that bodily function. PIP looks at the claimant's ability to complete specific tasks within the activity and is points-based, these are clearly defined and it is easy not to score points because the claimant has not shown that they meet those specific criteria.
DLA treated the use of aids as a reason to reduce the amount of care needed, PIP treats aids as an indication of disability and in general they score extra points.
DLA's care need was reasonably generic, PIP treats prompting, assistance and supervision as different activities and as a result, they can score different points.
DLA required that the care was required for the majority of the time, for PIP it is the majority of days.
For PIP activities must be completed reliably, this means
• Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person.
• To a necessary and appropriate standard – given the nature of the activity.
• Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
• In a timely manner – in a reasonable time period.
Although DLA considers these terms, they are poorly defined as they are implemented through Case Law rather than being defined in the legislation as they are for PIP.
So DLA referred to Cutting up food, eating or drinking, PIP looks at
a. Can take nutrition unaided. 0 points.
b. Needs –
(i) to use an aid or appliance to be able to take nutrition; or
(ii) supervision to be able to take nutrition; or
(iii) assistance to be able to cut up food. 2 points.
c. Needs a therapeutic source to be able to take nutrition. 2 points.
d. Needs prompting to be able to take nutrition. 4 points.
e. Needs assistance to be able to manage a therapeutic source to take nutrition. 6 points.
f. Cannot convey food and drink to their mouth and needs another person to do so. 10 points.
They should also be aware that there is less focus on the condition(s) that people suffer from, but their ability to fulfill the tasks as set out in the PIP criteria.

I'm the same as you. I'm still on DLA high mobility and middle care for an indefinite award. I know at some point I will get the transfer to PIP and totally dread the stress of it. I so wish someone could give us a likely time span as to when that could be though. My heart sinks each time I see a brown envelope in the post. Does anyone have any idea when the transfer should be completed by?

Hi sheeps68
We can't give you a timespan for the completion. It should have been completed some years ago but they were already behind when the pandemic emerged.

Hi sheeps68
It is not a transfer from DLA to PIP, for DLA claimants born after 08/04/1948 they will be asked to apply for PIP, I believe at present the process has been suspended.
We have heard on the forum from members who were in receipt of indefinite DLA being awarded zero points and therefore loosing the award.
Before you receive the dreaded brown envelope, (think the colour has changed now)have a good read of our PIP guide as the descriptors are different for DLA and PIP; benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/pip
