PIP assessment recording was created by Mason
Hi all, I've had the date for my telephone assessment now which is first week in March. I called them to ask for my assessment to be recorded and he said the date would have to be changed. I'm really reluctant to do this because 1) I don't really want my anxiety ramped up by a longer wait and 2)my support person (sister) is available the date they've given but I know I'm going to struggle to get support another time. He also said that I could record it but to let the assessor know at the beginning. I know that we don't have to let them know and I'm worried if I do that they will terminate the appointment. Any thoughts about pro's and cons? Many thanks

Hi Mason

I can't tell you what to do here. Some assessors won't mind being recorded, and some will, and unfortunately, you won't have any idea of their preferences until the day. If they do mind, the call will be cancelled, and a new date must be arranged.

Only you can decide whether you want to take this risk.

Another option is to make a covert recording (which is what we advise - even if the assessor has said they are going to record the call). You're allowed to do this as it is in your home and for your use, and you don't have to seek anyone's permission to do it. Lots of people choose this option, and they are glad they did.

A third option - a few people use- is for the person with them to take accurate notes. It's not easy unless the support person is familiar with doing it, but it's certainly better than having no record at all.

I was in the same position and had already had one assessor fail to arrive at work and therefore my appointment was deferred. I thought it best to inform the next assessor i was recording our discussion, she said to wait (obviously went to ask someone if she needed to accept this) and returned to say it was OK. However the call got cut off twice and then I had a call saying her phone wasn't working and another assessor would call back and finish the assessment, even called a second time to confirm the call would be in 10 minutes, and then after keeping me waiting all afternoon said they'd need to reschedule!!

They then managed to book me the next day (after I kicked off somewhat and refused to wait another 2 weeks) this time the assessor also had recording equipment!

In hindsight I would suggest doing a covert recording, however I am sure I received a better outcome than I would from the assessor who aborted the call as she was definitely trying all the questions I'd heard about to try and discredit my claims, the second caller seemed very different.
