Mobility Component of PIP and Pensioners was created by Barker1952
I voluntarily asked for a PIP Review as my Arthritis has got much worse. I answered all the Daily Living questions with my change of circumstances and also the Mobility Component questions as my walking distance has been greatly reduced because of my condition. I have just received my AR1 Review notification and I have been awarded the Enhanced Rate for Daily Living instead of the Standard Rate - a much welcomed increase! However, my Mobility Component hasn't been reviewed - As mentioned above, my walking distance has been greatly reduced, so I applied for additional points above the 4 points already rewarded (for being able to walk between 50 to 200 metres) to being only able to walk approximately 20 metres on a good day - to below this on a bad day. The reason given was the DWP cannot legally change the Mobility Component for someone over 65. I am 70. is this right? Now here's the annoying part. I had a Motobility Car for 15 years years under the old DLA Scheme-Enhanced Rate, but on conversion to PIP in 2017, I had the car taken off me as I couldn't achieve the Enhanced Rate of Mobility just as I was about to turn 65 (one month short of my birthday). A Mandatory Reconsideration did help slightly, but only gave me 4 points from the previous 0 points - still not enough for the Standard Rate. Having a new car is actually not required now, but the Enhanced Rate, or even the Standard Rate would be handy at my age these days. Why am I excluded from being able to achieve this now? Is it age discrimination? Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Barker1952
I'm afraid the information you have been given is correct. If someone does not have a mobility award or they have a standard award - this cannot be changed over the age of 65. It's been this way since it was set up.

Hi BIS, surely it is State Pension Age??? - which is 66 or older for some people eg us WASPIs [Women Against State Pension Injustice]. Please confirm.
Thanks,

Dear Barker,
I am 75 approaching 76. I am in receipt of DLA indefinitely for the High Care component but I can only ever get low mobility component. I am lame now and my mobility has greatly decreased. I can only walk with a stick, in fact need two sticks, but because I sometime carry things, with great difficulty, so I tend to use just one.
Am in constant pain when I walk because post traumatic osteoarthritis in my ankle from a fracture. I have a brace from the hospital on my ankle. Also had a knee replacement in 2017.
Yes, it would be nice to be able to get a higher mobility rate, and disappointing that us older disabled folk do not get it. I understand that Attendance Allowance does not even have a mobility component at all.
T.B.H. just glad to get the amounts that I do get.
I do have a blue badge though which I can use in a friend's car, but mostly use it in my son's car when I go to stay with my him.
I also get funded through my local borough for a London taxi card which is quite useful. If and when they do turn up

It is 65 or State Retirement Age, whichever is the higher.
