Help please!! On income related ESA and PIP will I have to change to universal Credit, im thinking about living with someone, they do not work or receive benefits just an army pension. Will I lose my esa due to if I move in or will I be forced to change my esa and pip over to universal credit please??
I’m worried as I’ve looked it up and it says you have to claim as a couple, but I know he won’t
agree to it due to he is very private and won’t share information with anyone.
What happens if he refuses, im worried I’m not going to survive financially,

THANKYOU IN ADVANCE XX

PIP is not a UC related benefit so whatever happens you will continue to receive PIP as long as meet the criteria for an award.

As to your ESA, you don't mention what type of ESA you are receiving, there are two types;

Legacy ESA which comprises a component based on your National Insurance Contributions (ESA(CB)) and a Means Tested component (ESA(IR)).

New Style ESA, this is the current version of the benefit and only has the Contributions based component.

If you are only receiving ESA(CB) or NS ESA, then moving in with your partner will have no effect on your ESA.

If you are receiving ESA(IR) in part or in whole then any income, your partner's pension for example and any savings and assets will effect your ESA(IR).

I would get face to face advice from a trained advisor who can explain how your benefits will actually be affected if you join your households. See

Hi Laura

You will want to do as Gordon suggests and speak to a specialist welfare advisor. They should have knowledge of what you can do if your partner refuses to assist you. I have attached a link to see if you can find one in your area. advicelocal.uk/
