Should I report this change in circumstance?

Hi I had to go to tribunal to get PiP last year. I thought there was enough evidence to be awarded higher rates due to mental and physical symptoms. But not all of my health problems were not taken into account and the eventual award was for lower rates.

Over the past year my mental health problems have worsened as have my physical symptoms. I attempted suicide just before Christmas which lead to a diagnosis of Complex Post Traumatic Disorder along with other diagnosis's.

Complex PTSD is not a new problem for me, it just wasnt accepted by dwp in my initial claim. I believe this is because I didnt have a formal diagnosis.I now have that and have just started treatment for it and new medication.

My question is, now that I have proof of PTSD I wondered whether it might be worth notifying DWP of the diagnosis as a change in circumstances? As I say my Mental and Physical health has deteriorated since the tribunal which is making daily living even harder.

I would be really grateful for any advice.

Hi Lauren

It’s good that you now have the evidence of your condition backed up by professionals.

I think you now have to consider just how these conditions affect your daily life.

You need to show that you struggle with daily life and that this struggle can only be mitigated by physical aids and/or the support of others including carers.

If you then feel that the support you need now is greater than the support you reported to the tribunal and can evidence this by stating what additional physical aids you now need and/or what additional support you now need (whether or not you get that support) then you would be justified in reporting the change.

As ever, though, reporting the change will open up the possibility of further evaluation with all the effort required from you to deal with that and the emotional stress these things cause.

I guess what I’m saying is that you might want to think carefully before you move on this especially if your mental health is fragile at this time.

I know this may not be the answer you were looking for and I would welcome others views.

Regards
Pete
