PIP - New Diagnosis was created by Cjmp45
Hi. I have an ongoing claim for PIP for which I receive Standard Daily with light touch review. In August I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, subsequently had an operation in October and started Chemo in January. The side effects are on another level and affect some of my conditions which are part of my current PIP claim. My head has been all over the place since being given the diagnosis and it's only in recent days I thought I should contact PIP to advise them of new conditions. On top of this it then triggered that when I had a bad fall at home in Feb 21 for which I didn't receive any physio until June 22 for just one of the places I injured (ankle, left knee and left hip) I didn't think to report this back to PIP either. In August 22 I had my first physio session for my left knee which revealed I have a miniscus tear which cannot be treated (with steroids) until after my cancer treatment ends. In the meantime due to the side effects of chemo the pain in my joints (I have arthritis in my right knee) my mobility is getting worse. How do i approach this chain of events - would it be simply requesting to add new conditions to existing claim, or a brand new claim? If it's adding new conditions to existing claim do I then mention existing conditions or just write about my new conditions. I have plenty of letters regarding diagnosis, treatment, operation, oncology, physio for the two appointments I had one for knee and one for ankle plus phsycology reports which can be scanned and sent. I'm just confused as to the way forward. Thanks in advance for any help

The key thing you should be looking at is whether this deterioration has resulted in you meeting the criteria for a higher award? If it does and clearly does then you can report a Change in Circumstances but be aware this will result in a full review of your current award, a PIP2 to complete and almost certainly an assessment. If you would struggle with this then think carefully before contacting the DWP.

If you do not think a higher award is likely then in all honesty they won't mind if you do not contact them at this time.

Remember, you must have suffered your current limitations for three months and be reasonably expected to suffer them for a further nine months.

Hi Gordon, Many thanks for your reply.
They are aware I already had a lower back and right hip problem that was causing me issues when walking. The fall has affected my right ankle, left knee and left hip. Basically I damaged all the ligaments from my ankle to knee on right side. I didn't get any physio due to NHS backlogs until 16 months after the accident - the appointment was supposed to check out all three areas but ended up just investigating my ankle. 4 months later I had an appointment for my left knee by which time I had been told I had cancer, had my biopsies and was waiting for results. Because of this I was told that the miniscus tear I had on left knee wouldn't be able to be treated until after any Chemo/Radiotherapy had finished as I can't walk properly due to my ankle it's causing extra pressure on my left leg and knee plus as my hip hasn't yet been investigated I'm in trouble. Mix this up with my Fibromyalgia CFS/M.E and the side effects from Chemo I'm in a mess. My mobility is worsening due to not being treated and the side effects of Chemo causing joint pain seems to be attacking all my weak spots. The pain is horrendous added to which I have a weakened immune system due to Chemo killing off white blood cells picked up a viral infection which has taken six weeks to clear and postponed two courses of Chemo I've been appointed a clinical psychologist because this whole Cancer journey has caused a mental meltdown. Is there ever a right time to let PIP know you are on a Cancer journey and all that goes with it?

Hi Cjmp45

I'm sorry for you diagnosis. You ask when is the right time to tell the DWP about your cancer journey. As Gordon says, this is something that only you can decide. You can tell them about a change of circumstances now, which will trigger a review. Only you know if you're currently well enough to go through that process. You could tell them they will send you out a review form, and you can fill it in and request a paper-based decision, citing that you are not currently well enough for a telephone or face-to-face assessment. The risk with that approach is that they don't have to agree to do a paper-based assessment.

So it comes down to this - if you think there's a good chance you would meet the criteria for an increased award - have you the energy and strength to go through a review process? If you have, then go ahead and start the process. If you want to leave it for now, you can.

@BIS many thanks right now I just don't have the energy. In my head I thought I HAD to tell them which is why I raised the question. And although I probably would score on the mobility side I don't have the time, patience or energy to put myself through the rigmarole of the system if I'm being honest with myself. I was starting to panic because I thought I had to let them know. I have an ongoing award not sure how far into it I will be due a review but hopefully I will have more energy by then to deal with things. Thanks again and to Gordon for helping :)
