PIP - What should PIP do when a PIP award is coming to an end? was created by Ian
When a PIP award is coming to an end what is PIP supposed to do? Do they write to the claimant and enclose a new PIP claim form, or do they write to the claimant and advise them that they need to request a new PIP claim form? Or do they not contact the claimant and it is entirely up to the claimant to know that the award is going to end and for them to contact PIP to request a new PIP claim form? And if they should contact the claimant when should they do this?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Ian,
If a claimant had their award made by the DWP, they should receive a review form up to a year before the award end date. Recently some people have received these review forms up to 16 months before the end date - because of the huge backlog of cases the DWP are dealing with.
Some people have been sent out extension letters to their awards - and then, a few weeks later, receive a review form.
The picture is still uncertain if a claimant had their award made by a Tribunal. Some claimants have received a review form and some received a letter telling them to put in for a new claim.
If anyone has not heard from the DWP and their claim has only three months to go - I would advise them to ring the DWP ASAP and ask what is happening. No one wants to be left without money.

BIS,
Thank you for your reply. The award was by a tribunal in October 2022 and because of the time that elapsed for the appeal process the award ends in April 2023. The claimant believed that PIP would send him a new claim form or contact him about the need to reapply as a matter of course and normal procedure. However when they didn't he assumed that they then must be going to extend the award. Eventually having heard nothing from PIP he contacted them 6 weeks before the award was due to end and was told nothing was on the computer and it would be referred to the case manager. He then received the reply 3 weeks later telling him that he needed to phone PIP to request a new PIP claim form if he still needed PIP. He has done so and now has the new claim form. It seems rather unfair if PIP is not operating a consistent approach in how it deals with expiring awards.

Hi Ian
I agree with you about the unfairness of people with a Tribunal award. We thought recently that the DWP was going for a more consistent approach, but it is clear they aren't. I hope the claimant's claim is dealt with quickly!
