Phone Assessment Next week, very stressed was created by Jaenor
Hello, I guess I'm just hoping for some reassurance. I sent in my Pip forms over a year ago... (early 2022) and every now and again I'd get a text message - from the DWP saying they had it, then from Pip (Independent Assessment Services) and then one from Pip saying I have to now have a telephone consultation.
I have become so anxious about this I feel ill. I don't know what to expect, but it's been so stressful just waiting and waiting for such a long time. I've had more health issues recently, and this is just making things worse.
How bad is this going to be? I don't know what to expect or what they are going to ask. Is there a guide I should study? Even just coming here and typing about it is making me feel ill.
Please help.

Hi Jaenor
If you have a look at our PIP guide at the link below you will see that there are a number of pages which include advice on telephone assessments. Yes, a lot of the questions are those that would have been asked if you had a face to face assessment.
benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/pip
- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!
additional information
1. Record the assessment surreptitiously. (Never trust that there won't be a problem with their equipment!)
2. Have someone with you (if you can).
3. Tell the assessor if you're tired or anxious and need a break.
4. Be aware of the unexpected question. Nearly everyone gets one - I think it's a deliberate ploy to confuse you or say that you're not depressed because you can remember something from 20 years ago!
5. If you normally take medication and would have taken it before the assessment - do so and tell the assessor.
Don't forget to contact DWP 48 hours after the assessment and ask for a copy of the assessors report called PA4.

I had my phone assessment earlier this week, like you I was extremely stressed and anxious about the whole event. Like you I had waited since January 2022 since sending in a claim. I received a call prior to the appointment, just explaining what would happen, I was very upset on this call but held it together. When I received the call from the Judge and his colleagues they explained what they were going to do and say. I did get upset at times, but I have to say, they were very good with me. Offering me breaks, checking I had a drink available, asking if I was ok. I was awarded PIP, thankfully, I also found this site amazing for help and advice. Try to stay calm, have your paperwork ready, alongside a pen and paper to write notes on. Good Luck.

Thank you, Gary. I will have a look at that. I'm so worried about this it's making me feel ill, but I will come back with an update afterwards.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, Evesmum! I'll make sure I have pen and paper... I don't have a way to record anything, so will make notes.
I'm glad yours went okay!

Hi Jaenor, I had my telephone assessment (for review) last week, after waiting 18 months AND the first scheduled appointment being cancelled on the day so I was absolutely terrified! I have no idea how I got on or my points but the assessor was great in terms of giving me time and allowing me and my friend who was supporting me to say what we needed to. She wasn't overly sympathetic - but having had an assessor who seemed lovely but awarded me 0 points in the past (overturned after a call from the decsion maker) then I'd take calm and professional any time.
I spent time going through the guides on here - taking advice from the moderators and having lots of notes that I could look at. I hope it goes well for you.
