PIP award and retirement was created by Julia
Hi All,

Could anyone tell me what happens to a PIP award when you reach retirement age? Is it ongoing or subject to review as I received and returned the dreaded how your disability affects you forms in February though my current award runs until September 2023.

Many thanks.

In simple terms, nothing happens.

Your PIP award will continue until the award End Date, sometime before this, it could be as early as a year, you will be reassessed hopefully resulting in a new award, which may then be an On-Going one.

Be aware, after State Retirement Age you cannot be awarded the Mobility component if an existing award is not in place nor can it be increased if you only have a Standard award, even if it is acknowledged that you meet the criteria. So if this could be a potential issue then consider reporting a Change of Circumstances before you reach SRA.

Thank you Gordon.

I'm wondering what will happen to my COL payments? I currently receive ESA Support Group so am eligible for first amount as my birthday is 3rd week in May. I have applied for Pension Credit as I was awarded SDP but no idea whether I will get it. When I applied for PC I was told no decision would be made until SP begins. If not will I only be paid once (£301) and not have grounds to appeal or will I receive the whole £900 in instalments. It's a minefield as always.

Hi Julia

Pension Credit entitlement is one of the easy benefits to work out. you look at what income you have coming in such as state Pension, occupational pensions, private pensions, add it all together and work it out on a weekly basis and then you take this figure away from your pension credit entitlement, GPC single person £182.60 pw, severe disability premium £69.40pw total = £252.00 this will give you your GPC entitlement figure.

Remember GPC is a qualifying entitlement for free prescriptions, TV licence when you turn 75 and other benefits.

If anyone claims carers allowance for you, then you will loose the SDP component of GPC.
