Retiring from work due to Ill health and ESA. was created by karen a a brown
I have used your site before and found it invaluable so I hope I can get some help. I am 63 and have bi polar and am really struggling with work and I have a couple of questions.
Should I approach my work and ask about early retirement on health grounds or just sign off sick and go from there?
As far as I can work out I could apply for esa in the support group. I get Pip low level person care. I have savings so can't apply for UC. I have worked for my Company for 18 years but my work pension only has 30k in it.
Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance.

Hi Karen Brown,
If you wish to claim benefits, I think it is important to get proper advice from a benefits advisor so you can go through your eligibility and also work out what you might be eligible to get.
I think you should also speak to your employer. As some one with disability your employer has to make reasonable adjustments for you. This could be providing special equipment, allowing more breaks or differing work practices, if these things might help. Additionally it might be possible to ask to reduce your hours. Your employer will need to consider this.
I also think you should also ask HR for a full pension breakdown, and if necessary take independent advice from a properly registered pensions advisor. If your workplace is currently considering redundancies, there might be an advantageous deal to take early retirement.
Retiring early has serious financial implications, and you need to be sure that you make the best decision for both now and later, as this could also affect your state retirement pension.
Before you make any decisions make sure you have all the financial information to make the most informed decision you can. Whilst claiming benefit could be one option, it may not be the only option, or indeed the best option. Please see proper advice.
Good luck.
