PIP mobility component after retirement age

Hi,
My mother has been receiving DLA (now PIP) for many years before retirement age. When being moved to PIP, she lost her mobility component, even after tribunal (we never agreed).

Anyway, her health conditions have got much worse since and when she enquired about having her PIP looked at again, she was told that she could no longer get the mobility component regardless, as she had lost it since being past retirement age.
I was under the impression that as long as you receive PIP at any rate or component before retirement age, your PIP would continue, including rate and component changes.
Have I got this wrong?

Thanks

Hi Ninko,
If you reach state pension age and are already in receipt of PIP you can continue to receive any mobility award that you have. However it can not be Increased. A Daily Living award can be increased after pension age.
If you reach pension age and you have exhausted any appeal that you might make on the claim, if you do not have a mobility award , you will not be able to claim this. Unfortunately this will still be the case even if your health deteriorates and mobility decreases.
I'm afraid that the information given to your mother was correct and she will not be able to claim a PIP mobility award. If she receives standard daily living she can ask for DWP to review the award and then if appropriate your mother could then receive enhanced rate of daily living.
I hope this helps clarify things.

Thanks LL26 for your reply, I should have guessed when it comes to the DWP.

In that case, would she have better luok applying for attendance allowance instead?
I don't know much about attendance allowance in relationship to PIP.

Thanks

Hi Ninko

Unfortunately, there is no mobility component with attendance allowance. People apply for Attendance allowance when they are over SRA and are not in receipt of PIP.

Hi Ninko,
If your mother is already on PIP she can continue to claim this. There is no reason to claim Attendance Allowance. This is the elderly person's version of PIP but the criteria are slightly different as it is based on Disability Living Allowance, and the amount of care received, not points like PIP. However there is NO mobility element for AA and the high and low rate are the same as enhanced and standard daily living for PIP.
It is entirely possible given different criteria that your mum genuinely might not get AA.
Since there is nothing to be achieved by reclaiming as AA, I don't think there is any point in doing this.
I hope this clarifies.
