ESA/UC confusion was created by slowlysinking
UC has not been rolled out yet where I live, and I'm still on the legacy ESA (support group) benefit. Currently, ESA is paid regardless, but UC is means-tested.

Does this mean that anyone previously entitled to ESA but has savings, would not be entitled to anything under UC?

I know there is a sliding scale whereby benefits are reduced per X amount of savings, but if a person is entitled to ESA and then when they are moved over to UC, suddenly they're not entitled to anything, that can't be right surely?

That would mean that people who have previously worked and saved for their old age are now being penalised for having built up savings for their retirement. So presumably this means they would have to live off their savings until they went below the threshold for eligibility.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case please? It is all very confusing.

Actually UC has been rolled out across the country!

I assume you are referring to the article in today's newsletter, if not then you will need to re-phrase your question.

The White Paper that has prompted this discussion is full of holes, in particular in regard to Contribution Based ESA in its various forms.

Realistically we are not going to know any for definite until after the next election, likely May 2024, so please try not to worry, as confirmed information becomes available it will be published in the newsletter.
