Helping a friend through applications for esa, UC and PIP, all new claims. He has various health issues but main areas are depression, anxiety, heart issues, suicidal thoughts, learning disabilities. He is currently going through a bad patch and a divorce immenent too.
He had a phonecall apt for ESA from a work coach. I was with him and call extremely short telling us she would get agreement printed out for us to collect that afternoon as he also had an appt at jobcentre to present ID. I mentioned substantial circumstances which she knew of and said not to worry, easy going from now on.
My friend was very relieved as he had been worrying considerably about it.
Arrived at jobcentre to be greeted by someone else, she took id & sick note but was very frosty and uncaring. She told us that he had to attend weekly visits to work coach and booked a date in. I questioned this as I had thought given his circumstances he would be a substantial risk - which can be proved as he had to see dr for increase in medication day before.
Is this correct that he has to attend and if so, how often and what will it entail? If she was wrong, how do we go about sorting it out?

The Fit Note should remove your friend from the All Work group but their Work Coach is entitled to ask them to carry our Work Related Activity if they feel it is appropriate.
First thing to do is to contact the Work Coach and negotiate a better position, for example; would weekly phone conversations rather than visits to the Job Centre be OK?
Get them to speak to their GP, a suitably worded letter may help remove any requirements, it needs to make it clear that on-going contact will be detrimental to your friend's health and if applicable that they would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress".
Worst case they can ask for a new Work Coach to be assigned but there is no guarantee that they will be any better than the first.
