Hello
I applied for benefits after getting covid in 2020 ( in hospital ) I got long covid and haven't been the same since . I have had memory issues and brain fog amongst other symptoms . In fact it's taken me three tries to write this
Since the DWP have asked for bank statements with no reason ..a family member looked into the whole benefits outline for me
I am distressed to find that on UC I have to tell them I am going out of country to visit family for 5 weeks as I need to rest fully . Will I be allowed ? and will they suspend my benefits ?
I also was now told by the family member reading the rules that although when I applied I was under £6000 I was to have told them I was over that . I thought I was to tell them if it was for over £16000 ? I actually thought too they had rights to monitor the bank accounts so thought that they would know if I was over any amount
I have since had another traumatic medical event ... this time they think the vaccine or covid or both .I am worried as I am not focused nor organised anymore and wonder what penalty I face with the mess of being over £6000 instead of £16000 as I thought ?
I also wonder if there's a way to get representation or help in dealing with this ?

Hi Lee
If you go abroad, you can continue to get Universal Credit for one month.
You must:
* be eligible for Universal Credit when you’re going abroad
* remain eligible for it while you’re abroad
* tell your work coach that you’re going
www.gov.uk/claim-benefits-abroad/universal-credit
Most means-tested benefits are only paid to people with less than £16,000 in savings (tax credits and the guarantee element of Pension Credit are not affected by this rule).
If you (and your partner) are under Pension Credit age and have total capital over £6,000 then the government assumes you receive £1 per week for every £250 of capital you have above £6,000, this is known as tariff income.
If you are over Pension Credit age the government assumes you receive £1 per week for every £500 of capital or part over the £10,000. There is currently no upper limit, you may have deemed income from capital. What this means is if you have £12,005 capital you will be treated as having £5 a week income.
DWP usually state ignorance is no defence, I would assume that you will be hit with an overpayment, I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk
