Contribution based ESA and NI credits was created by Rosie
I have been on contribution based ESA since April 2018 when I reached 60 and starting receiving my private personal pension; prior to that I was on income-related ESA since September 2010. I received NI credits for the first year, but nothing since then. The government website says "you may be entitled to NI credits if you are on ESA..." but it is totally unclear as to whether this includes contribution based ESA and the use of the word "may" implies the possibility of "may not". In 2016 the DWP completely stuffed up my claim and had to "rebuild it"; at the time they told me that they would have to do my NI credits manually from then on. Am I still entitled to NI credits?

Hi Rosie
NS ESA pays Class 1 NI Credits which in addition to being used in regard to your State Pension can also be used (in part), for a new claim of NS ESA. UC only pays Class 3 Credits which can only be used for your pension.
You can check your NI contributions; www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record.

Replied by Rosie on topic Contribution based ESA and NI credits
Hi Gary
I have no NI credits for the tax years 2019/20 onwards. On the plus side I will be 66 next April and already have 39 full years of NI contributions. It seems that the DWP SHOULD still be giving me NI credits but their absence on my NI record shouldn't cause me problems. However, given that I have developed zero faith in the DWP's ability to get anything right, I think that I will write to them (again) to get them to give me the NI credits. They only gave me the 2018/19 credits after I wrote to them, even though they told me it was automatic! Thirteen years of being on benefits (after a brutal sexual assault left me unable to work ) have left me with nothing but contempt for the system that I used to think so highly of.
Thanks for your input and keep up the good work.
