PIP or AA? was created by Rosalind
Hello, this is my first post. I have been on PIP lower rate for a long time, at my last two assessments I just missed out on the higher rate by one point. I've struggled on, my physical and mental health has deteriorated, mobility has got a lot worse. I know I could ask for a reassement for higher rate mobility, but I turn pension age in September this year, when I think PIP will stop anyway. Should I just wait til my 66th birthday and apply for Attendance Allowance then? Many thanks for your advice.

Hi Rosalind
PIP does not stop after state pension age. Those with an award already in place will continue to receive it. What you won't be able to do in your case is get an enhanced award for mobility after you reach SPA. There is no mobility component to AA.

Hi Rosalind
Welcome to the forum.
You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum
If your condition has got worse the you need to contact DWP and report a change of circumstances before you reach state pension age, as BIS has stated once you reach state pension age you cannot get a mobility award if you do not have one or an increase in your mobility award if you are on standard.
If you are successful with your claim then you keep the award after you reach state pension age.
You stated "at my last two assessments I just missed out on the higher rate by one point", did you contact DWP and ask for a copy of the assessors report called a PA4 to see how the assessor recorded your assessment, if you did not, then you need to get a copy to see where things may have gone wrong for next time.
