planning and following a journey was created by Anne
For planning and following a journey, I believe mental health is the main indicator of getting points for this activity. I have been diagnosed recently with functional cognitive impairment which means I have poor short-term memory. I do drive short distances but frequently forget where I am going or the route and take a wrong turning and end up having to do a longer trip which means I have even more pain due to my CRPS .I travel to my parents once every three months for a couple of weeks in either Belfast or Tenerife. This involves a train and a plane. I do have special assistance and I get the railway staff to plan my journey and print it out for me as my ability to process information is not the best.I I use the alarm on my phone as an aid and set it to go off three minutes before I am supposed to arrive. I use the Railway staff to help me get to where I need to be and if there is any disruption I need them to work out my new route and stay with me.
My concern is that because I take a train with help on the planning and the fact I drive, although even on familiar routes it ends up taking me longer, Is that they will say at the assessment that I can drive and use a train so I'm not eligible for any points.
My question is do you think I would be eligible for any points for planning and following a route? I don't think the pain is relevant for this descriptor?

Hi Anne

I cannot answer your question as it varies from person to person.

The Going Out activity looks at three things.

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. You are being asked about the problems you would have with working out how to get from one place to another, you do not need to be able to follow the route that you are planning.

Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stop you doing this. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.

Following a route - This activity about the problems you would have navigating a route. So are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent you from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if you cannot undertake a journey then you will not score points for following one and vice versa.
