Migrating to UC and bank accounts as an appointee

Hello

Grateful for any help with this query.

In a nutshell

1. Disability benefits in receipt for years with sister of the disabled person recognised as appointee by DWP and benefits paid into bank account in sister's name.

2, Migration to UC - disabled person set up on portal with UC login. Now DWP are insisting on a bank account in the disabled person's name.

Setting up a new bank account for an adult without an account of credit history is challenging at any time. But add in disability and capacity issues and this may lead to huge hassle and delay in payment .

My question is - how can the family best handle this so that previous arrangements re use of bank account, can carry on?

Thanks in advance

It used to be that a new claim for UC reset any appointeeship that was in operation. whilst this does not now seem to be the case for all claims we have seen the problem recently in the forum so it may now be being reinstated by the DWP.

I would first contact the DWP to confirm whether the appointeeship is still in place.

If it is then I would point out that the whole point of it is the claimant is not able to handle their own money, benefits included and that is why they do not currently have an account.

You could also try stating it would be detrimental to the claimant's health to have such an account, assuming this is the case.

I recently had to be made appointee for UC for my daughter having already been her appontee for PIP for a number of years. So much conflicting information though as daughter has her own account and I input those details for payment only to be told that it should be my account. I got round it by telling them I have log in details for her account as well and that seemed to satisfy them.
