PIP Missed Renewal Deadline was created by babydylan76
Hello

My PIP deadline for renewal was 16th May 2023. However, I missed this deadline due to being in hospital for 4 weeks. I did try to call during my hospital stay but failed to get through and was on hold for 35 minutes on one call - I have taken screen shots so I can prove this. I asked the sister to write a letter to explain this as I had a few complications during admission which eventually led to a confirmation of a line infection and COVID.

My condition since my renewal has worsened and I have now been discharged to home with daily TPN feeds and am visited twice a day by nurses to administer and disconnect my feeds until I am well enough to complete the training and carry out these procedures myself as I am still struggling with COVID.

I just wondered if you had either a sample letter or some wording I could use to write to the DWP to explain why i missed the deadline and to request an extension taking into account my current health. status etc and time needed to request copies of my medical records for the previous 2 years.

My initial award was due to end December 2023. I have renewed my membership with your site and am in the process of printing the PIP members guide. I have been a member of yours for years and have always found these guides so incredibly helpful.

Any assistance or advice with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Zoe

Hi babydylan76

I'm sorry to hear about your recent hospital stay and ongoing issues.

You're probably not going to want to follow the advice I'm going to give. If you can face it you need to phone the DWP ASAP because there's a danger that the DWP will cancel your claim. I know that it will mean you hanging on the phone (and it can be as much as an hour), but if you just send a letter, there is no telling how quickly it will be processed and get onto the system.

So if you can bear it - I would ring and just tell them you were in hospital. Have the dates you were in - because your PIP claim gets paused when you are in more than 28 days. Once you speak to them, I would hope they will treat you kindly and tell you what to do next, and hopefully, you will be given a new deadline. Whatever you're told, you then want to write to them confirming the time and date of the conversation and who you spoke to. (Keep a copy yourself). Don't worry about the wording. It isn't a test (though I get it sometimes feels like that).
