Hi
I'm looking for some clarification on which benefits are means tested.
PIPs - I know is not means tested
UC - as self employed - yes I know it is.
UC50 - LCWRA - ?????
Carers Allowance - allowed to earn up to a limit before it's stopped

Hi Diane,
Correct PIP is NOT means tested.
UC is means tested.
UC50 is the form you may need to fill out to enable a claim for UC. I'm not sure that UC50 LCWRA has any legal meaning.
UC LCWRA or limited capability for work activity means that you are too ill/disabled to both work and do work activity, such attend work focused interviews etc - this us not a separate benefit, just part of UC.
This is equivalent to the Support Group for ESA. The Support Group rate was payable as both a means tested benefit, Contribution based benefit or even a hybrid depending on circumstances. Certainly if there were enough NI contributions and too much income eg spouse working and/or too much capital eg over £16000 then only Contribution based ESA could be paid if there was no other income and little or no capital then there could be a solely means tested or hybrid claim.
Carers Allowance can be paid if you care for someone who gets at least standard rate daily care of PIP or equivalent under eg DLA or Attendance Allowance., and no one else claims CA for the same person.You need to perform at least 35 hours a week of caring for this person. You are able to do some part time work up to £139 per week and claim CA.
If a carer claims CA then this will preclude a disabled person who lives alone (and qualifies) claiming severe disability premium.
You can get UC and get paid CA but the UC amount will get reduced by the amount of CA.
CA is taxable.
You can receive PIP and this won't affect the amount of UC or get taxed.
