Inaccuracy in OT report worry? was created by LondonLady
Hello,
I wonder if you can advise me. I am in the process of filling in the PIP forms for my son who’s just turned 16, and l have a pretty detailed OT report which helps to evidence his difficulties.
I am concerned though as l’ve seen an incorrect statement in this report which states that my son ..”had no problem handling money when he goes to the shops”. This is completely incorrect and must have been something my son said in his assessment, he cannot go out alone and in a shop with me he can physically hand over money, but he doesn’t know how much, doesn’t check the price of items or his change…has no concept that of the value of money and has been out of school since he was 12 because of his needs, with only a few hours of 1 to 1 tutoring a week.
How can l best point out that this is incorrect in my forms, l was thinking of just adding some working in pen to the report to say this is not correct, or am l better if saying that whilst he can physically hand over money, he has no idea of the value etc etc .
This one incorrect statement is not in keeping with the rest of the report which is a good representation of my sons needs and l don’t want him loosing points because of this inaccurate statement . I am his appointee because he cannot manage his finances so this should be evidence enough?
Just to add, l cannot have the report ch aged at it is being used as part of a send tribunal hearing against my sons current EHCP.
Any advise of very welcome please

Hi LondonLady
I would underline that comment on the copy of the report - and say "incorrect - See Question 12 - Managing Money page X" - and then when you are answering that question, I would say, "Although my son's report says xyz - this is incorrect ..." and then put in what you have to do for him.
I wouldn't just leave it to chance and hope that the assessor doesn't read it - because they probably will, but nor would I assume that they would realise because you handle his affairs, that proves he can't manage them. You know that's why you're his appointee, but you need to spell it out to them. What seems obvious to us is not always obvious to assessors and people often lose out on points because they assume assessors will understand.
Also, make sure when answering the other questions that you use quotes from the other points of the report which you say accurately portray his difficulties.
