DWP PIP and Council tax reduction was created by Leanne2730
Hi
I am not going through this process now as I am not longer eligible for council tax reduction - but I am curious. A few years ago I was very unwell and couldn't really follow things properly. I do seem to recall the council sending me a letter saying my council tax was going up because my PIP had gone up. I do know that I hadn't informed the council of my increased amount and I now think the DWP must have informed my local council? Is this even possible? Can anyone explain? It is irrelevant now but I can't help but wonder and I seem to recall a friend saying 'they give with one hand and take with the other'. Thank you to anyone who replies!

Hi Leanne2730,

Yes, the DWP is increasingly sharing its Benefits data with Local Authorities. The DWP has given access permission to more of its data screens on CIS Searchlight since it was enabled in Local Authorities in 2019. So the appropriate staff at the Council ( and out sourced agents like Capita ) can check on Benefit payments, including PIP and DLA.

Hope this helps,
David

PIP is non means tested therefor any increase you get doesn't mean your council tax will go up.

That confirms what happened and it would be about 2019 or 2020 when this happened to me. I don't think I have kept any of the paperwork! I do think the public should be made aware of these changes in society! It is such a relief not to have to claim council tax benefit anymore! Now that I am a lot better I am remembering more and trying to make sense of things. The general public really does not know of all these surveillance techniques! Thank you for that clarification.

Hi Leanne2730,

One other thing I have discovered over the years is that you can expect better service from Council Tax departments that have retained their own Local Authority employed staff rather than those that have outsourced their services to private profit making companies. I wonder what other members think ?
