Managed migration to UC was created by Jasmine
Hi,

Friend has letter asking to migrate to UC. On IR ESA (support group) he’s got to 12 January to apply

Quick couple of questions

When is the best time to make claim for UC in the 3 month deadline

Also

He lives with his elderly mum in warden assisted housing association property.
She receives state pension. She’s in receipt of Housing Benefit

DWP and HOusing Assoc and Council know he’s always lived with her and on benefits and as a non dependent adult he has to pay something towards her rent costs which he does

As you can only make one claim per household
Can I ask what happens to the mum housing benefit. Is it added to his claim.

They are both so stressed about this as she just lost entitlement to winter fuel allowance

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Jasmine

Hi Jasmine,

The best time to apply during the 3 month window depends if there are going to be any changes in Benefit entitlement which affect the amount of transitional protection. Changes could be fluctuations in income or children leaving the household etc. Also remember the timing of UC payments is different from Legacy Benefits and is paid monthly.

As far as Housing Benefit is concerned you are best advised to contact the Housing Association which should have a Financial Inclusion officer who could help you.
