Benefit Sanction Route? was created by bahern
Hi there,
I have quite severe (and visible) lifelong mental (and moderate physical) disabilities. However, I am unable to fill in the UC50 form. I tried, managed to write my name and address, but became increasingly overwhelmed and then suicidal and had to stop.
I appreciate this possibly sounds histrionic (?) and exaggerated to some, but I have considerable trauma attached to things like essays and complex form filling, and over the last 20+ years have found it increasingly impossible to complete them, even when I resort to extreme forms of self-harm (which used to help when younger).
I avoided claiming UC before the forced migration in order to avoid triggering this scenario, and was able to survive just on HB and PIP (another form that I couldn't complete, but was given two extensions for and so eventually managed to scrape something together) with some support from family.
My question is, would it be possible to just claim the housing element of UC and then be permanently benefit sanctioned for the rest of my life for not doing any of the things in the claimant commitment? Or will they eventually just stop all of the support?
Thanks

Hi David,
I claim HB and PIP. Nothing else.
I used to be on incapacity benefit but when they started making that nightmarish to claim about 20 years ago I had to stop claiming that.
Thanks

Hi bahern,
Yes sometime in the next 12 months your HB will be replaced with UC. I think with our support and help from organisations like Citizens Advice Help to Claim you can avoid a sanction. Also a sanction does not apply to the Housing Costs element ( your rent ).
As far as forms are concerned you could be assisted to apply for a UC telephone only claim.

Thanks David. I think I explained myself poorly. This is one of my many problems with filling in forms and being understood.
I was forced onto UC in October (from HB). I have been unable to complete the UC50 form in time. I would rather [euphamism for no longer being alive].
I am trying to ascertain whether permanent sanctions are a viable alternative to attempting to complete UC50 and go through this nightmarish process.
It would seem permanent sanctions are a viable option, assuming the housing costs aren't sanctioned and they don't just kick you off UC entirely.

Hi bahern,
As I said previously UC Housing Costs cannot be sanctioned..
Also I don't think you understand how sanctions work. They can't be imposed unilaterally.
