Thank you David. Yes I know I am worrying, I hear so much about things that go wrong with the UC claim that I'm trying to make 100% sure I do the claim for my son correctly.

The Council Tax reduction is another problem, but at least it's not a legacy benefit. On the borough’s website where son is moving to it doesn’t mention all the eligibility criteria for Council Tax Reduction, I could see it had PIP which gives eligibility but nothing about UC. I telephoned the council tax department to ask since it’s something I need to know as son wouldn't be able to afford a lot of council tax, he currently gets full council tax reduction. The advisor said for me to first register my son for council tax when he has moved, and then to make a claim for council tax reduction, even though I wouldn’t know the outcome of the UC claim for several weeks after !

Hi Anneb,

The problem with Council Tax is that Local Authorities vary greatly with the amount of assistance they give to those unable to work. For instance Wandsworth Council expects even the poorest residents to pay 30% of the Council Tax bill but down the road in Camden some residents pay 0%.
Also some people could be in receipt of Universal Credit and earning over £30,000 per year, with a large family and living in a high rent area.

Thank you David. The council my son would be moving to is London Borough of Richmond.....I hope they don't expect as much from the poorest as Wandsworth :(
