Managed Migration to UC from ESA- Permitted Work

Hi all.

I'm migrating to UC from ESA (Support Group) but I've been doing Permitted Work with a mental health charity.

The work has been within the boundaries that are in place and has never gone over the hours/pay thresholds.

I'm just looking at the form to make a claim for UC and there is a question about whether I'm employed, self-employed or unemployed.

If I'm doing Permitted Work (which isn't regular and is akin to a Zero Hours Contract i.e. I only work the hours when and if they need me. I'm Bank Agency staff) do I state I'm employed or unemployed as there no regular commitment to work?

Also, should I write in my journal that I'm doing Permitted Work?

There is no such thing as permitted work on UC but you have a monthly work allowance of £673 if you have no housing costs paid through UC and £404 if you do. Anything over those thresholds will see a reduction of £55p off your UC for every £1 earnt.
You are technically employed even if its on an ad hoc basis so will have to say you are employed. They will pull your earnings every month from HMRC whom your employer will report your earnings to .

I've asked this same question to both a welfare rights organisation and the Citizens Advice Help to Claim line as my son does 4 hours per week Supported Permitted Work under ESA. For the UC claim form I have to tick the Employed box. In the Journal I will explain that it's supported permitted work which is therapeutic.
