Would moving in with an elderly relative affect their disability benefits? was created by Ecovegan
Hi,
Hope you can help?
I'm thinking of moving in with my elderly mother after the death of my father. We are both on disability benefits. She's in receipt of DLA whilst I get ESA (income based) PIP and a disability premium. I won't be claiming any housing support.
How will this affect each others benefits? I'm sure I read somewhere on the forum that it won't but can't find that post. 🥴
Thank you for any replies.

Hi Ecovegan,
You won't lose your SDP ( severe disability premium ) because your mother is in receipt of DLA. Have a read of this useful information from the charity Scope, Living with Someone and the Severe Disability Premium- www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support/livi...e-disability-premium
One area where you may lose out is your mother will lose her Council Tax Single Occupier Discount if she currently pays Council Tax.
You didn't say if your mother receives Housing Benefit.

Hi David, I keep replying but not sure if I'm doing it properly as can't see my replies? So sorry if I'm repeating myself.
My mother doesn't receive housing benefit but does get single person council tax discount.
From what I understand as I will be there to support my parent. I will possibly qualify for council tax carers discount and will be disregarded so she will keep her 25% discount?

Hi Ecovegan,
Some Council's offer a carer's discount and as you say that could lead to a 25% discount which is the same as the Single Occupier Discount. Each Council in the UK is allowed to vary its discounts and Council Tax Reduction schemes so you will need to enquire of your Local Authority.
Hope this helps
