Query Migration to ESA was created by Rosie
Hello,
I care and help my 42yr son fill forms for his benefits.
He has had a letter to migrate to UC.
He currently gets ESA and his contibution for NI, he is in the support group, with enhanced disability premium and severe disability premium. Also gets PIP and housing & council tax benefits.
Doing a calculator check, and with the transitional element should get the same income for the first year, but then when UC raises with inflation reduces the transitional element so remains on same income for several years which would make him worse off in the long run as wont benefit from the raise per year like he does with ESA at the moment. Also the housing element is included in his income amount whereas previously it was not, so once the rent is taken out leaves him less.
Can he claim new style ESA and housing benefit instead? And would he still get the enhanced disability premium and severe disability premium if claiming new syle ESA.

Hi Rosie,
Your son will continue to receive his PIP which is not affected by Managed Migration.
ESA including all the premiums and Housing Benefit will stop on Managed Migration.
I expect your son currently receives Contribution Based ESA with an Income Based ESA supplement including the premiums. You cannot get the premiums with New Style ESA.
His Contribution Based ESA will change automatically to New Style ESA with Managed Migration. They are basically the same thing but he will be given a phone appointment to agree a basic Claimant Commitment regarding reporting changes to the DWP.
Have you heard about the Citizens Advice Help to Claim service. The phone number is on page 2 of your son's Migration letter. Here is a recommendation from our forum member.
