Hello I am considering becoming an appointee for my son who was admitted to hospital 13months ago. he has had a diagnosis of treatment resistant paranoid schizophrenia for around 15 years. He will be working towards discharge in the next few weeks.
He is able to manage his money, however is unable to deal with the administration of any benefits. In the past I have helped him with completing forms etc. He has an indefinite award of DLA and is currently on ESA, support group, there has not been a WCA for around 10 years. I am concerned about his migration to UC, as he will be unable to manage a claim. He is willing for me to become his appointee, if agreed by DWP would his benefits be able to be paid into his bank account?
He has received a letter from DWP to start the migration process.
You and your son will have an interview at his home address with a DWP visiting officer. As the mental condition of psychosis does fluctuate I would advise that you have something in writing confirming the diagnosis of treatment resistant schizophrenia. I used to work for the DWP and I'm aware that Visiting Officers have limited access to the disability Benefits IT. Once the appointeeship is granted all DWP Benefits will be paid into the appointees bank account. Though its within the discretion of the appointee if they wish to make regular payments to the disabled persons bank account.
Let me know how you get on. David
