How do they respond to nonadherence to medication?

I have an extreme fear of taking antidepressants as I am worried about side effects potentionally triggering other mental health issues like psychosis (it runs in my family). So even though I have been prescribed medication for anxiety several times, I am not presently taking it. Would this be enough for the DWP to basically give me 0 points on everything related to anxiety for not taking my medication? Or could I argue that having a fear of medication means I can't take it. I live alone btw so it's not like I have anyone to force me to take it.

Hi Trossard

I can't tell you how the DWP will act. They do have a bit of a thing about medication - but you are certainly not alone in not being able to take it - so fight your corner and tell them why you don't and what the impact is on you because you are unable to access any of the 'benefits' the medication might bring.

You’ve been prescribed meds cos you need them. Your mental health (the fear) is preventing you from taking them. Therefore you need someone to help you take them (even though there is no one). It’s about the need for that help. That someone could be helping by just reassuring and prompting you whilst you take it. Not taking the meds otherwise leads to worsening of your condition. The need for the meds and the need for the help to take them is still there.
It would be same for diabetes and someone who had a fear of needles. You just need to word it all in a way that is true for you and that they will understand.

I think that as long as you explain the reasons for not taking the medication then PIP should accept this.

Trossard, I rarely take anything due to side effects. It’s always mentioned, but I have evidence of it all. They can’t force us to take medz, well at least not at the moment they can’t.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I feel like the DWP will see my fears as unfounded. They’ll probably say I need at least try the medication and have bad side effects before I can refuse.
