Hi S123

Don't be sorry, not everyone know about credit reference agencies.

Found the following information on the Money Saving Website: www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/check-free-credit-report/#why

You can easily check your credit report – and it's totally free. Here's a quick lowdown if you know what you're doing and just want to get on with it. Alternatively, read our How to check your credit score for free guide below or check out our Credit scores guide for tips on how to improve your score.

There are three credit agencies which hold credit reports on you: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. It's best to check all three reports at least once a year, because they all have an impact. Here are our quick and FREE ways to do so:

TransUnion: use the MoneySavingExpert Credit Club, which gives you free access to your TransUnion report (among a lot of other things).

Experian: use Experian's CreditExpert* free 30-day trial, but you'll have to cancel before the end of the trial to avoid the ongoing £14.99/month fee. If you've already had the free trial, you can get Experian's free statutory credit report.

Equifax: use Clearscore* which provides free ongoing access to your Equifax report. Alternatively, you can go direct via Equifax's Credit Report and Score, though this is only available for free for the first 30 days and then costs £14.95/month thereafter (includes access to Equifax rewards).

As Gary said not everyone knows about these agencies. I used checkmyfile as they gather all three in one place on a 30 day free trial. I actually paid for the next month £14.99 as i'm sorting some stuff I found to be wrong. I passed the online verification and got them immediately. You can apply to each agency and get a statutory report for free but that will take a week or so after applying and I found it tedious. Dwp used Transunion with mine and from what I read up they had a contract with them at the time. If you choose to create an account with any of these agencies make sure the address you put in matches exactly in your supporting document (bank/credit card statement, council tax...) so your online verification will pass when you upload it to verify your address.

I’ve created a account with the credit agency and it’s all set up. When I verify my id what sort of questions will they ask? I have a passport so thats ok, but if I know what to expect I’ won’t panic.
Thanks

Hi S123,

They normally ask for something such as a passport and driving license for your photo side, and then a utility bill/council tax/rent or something showing that you live at the address you've enclosed.

Hope this helps.

Chris.

I read in a B&W newsletter that there is no rhyme ir reason to who gets the letter when.

I actually got mine in January when they announced they were starting in Feb, so I'm not sure how predictable any of it could be.

If it is like the ones other government agencies use for ID (e.g. DVLA, HMRC etc), they don't ask you to do the credit reference check yourself.

It's not like those one you need to get new credit, it's just to see if you know your own recent credit history.

They conduct it through their own systems and it doesn't affect your credit rating. I was asked questions like 'have you opened a new mobile phone contract/store card/mortgage etc within x amount of time'.

If your answers match the records then they take that as a sort of verification that you are who you say you are.

Hope that helps
