Universal credit/New style esa was created by craig41
I have for a number if years been claiming ESA IR with the severe disability premium as a top up.Aroundca month ago I was I formed I needed to migrate to Universal credit.I was notified in my journal that I have actually migrated, and am waiting to see what monies I will receive
Today I received a letter from the DWP informing me that payments will be split between UC and New style ESA.I did manage to speak to someone at the DWP but to be honest I still don't fully understand why this has happened. Would someone be kind enough in simple terms what the move means, and if I will be worse off.I do believe that ESA NEW STYLE is not means tested so does this mean I could have more than £6000 in my bank without it affecting my Universal Credit? Thanks in advance

Hi craig41

Have you been informed that you are getting Transitional Protection? Were you also getting help with your rent if a tenant ?

Hi David.I was told this morning when I rang the DWP that I was getting transitional protection, and I informed them in my UNIVERSAL Credit journal when I initially made my claim that I was covered for it too.
Yes I was getting full housing benefit when I was on IR ESA.

Hi craig41

If you have savings over £6000 then your UC will be reduced by £4.35 for every £250 you have between £6,000 and £16,000.
You get New Style ESA which is contribution based and is not affected by savings at all.
However your housing costs are paid through UC and not Housing Benefit. So you need to keep claiming UC to get help with your rent.

Thanks David,I am a little clearer now.
Just one more thing I am hoping you can advise me on. There is a paragraph in the letter I received yesterday which states I need to go and see a job coach at my local job centre to complete my ESA ( NEW STYLE) claim. Apparently they will create an agreement with me called a "Claimant Agreement" which I must accept.Failing to accept this will result in my claim being closed! Why is this a must and how can this be justified if prior to moving over to UC I was covered by being in the support group? I really am at my whitts end with the whole system.I am in 2 minds to tell the DWP where they can stick their monies and to start drawing off a private pension I have.Btw I am 62 yes old

Hi craig41

You can agree the claimant commitment over the phone. Just tell them you get the ESA Severe Disability Premium and you cannot commute to the Jobcentre. Quite a few Forum members have done this.
It is something that the Tory government devised--- that nobody has an entitlement to Benefits ---It has to be part of an agreement ---hence the claimant commitment for NE ESA. But if you are in the Support Group it is the basic claimant commitment which just means informing DWP of a change of circumstances.
