UC appointee bank account was created by lollo1
Hi , I am after some advice. I am our daughters appointee for PIP and Esa. Her money has always gone into our bank account but am aware at some point that she will migrate over to UC. At the moment we pay her phone, gym, clubs/activities etc by direct debit out of our account where her money goes into, she lives at home so obviously have responsabilty of feeding, housing her. She does have her own bank account and we transfer her £150 a month to spend on what she wants. All her clothing, holidays, trips, meals out, treats, life insurance and extras have always just come out of our account where her money has gone into. She has had to have private physio which all came out of her money but paid from our account where her money goes into. She does not have the capabilty to set her own direct debits up hence they are all in my name on her behalf. Now I am an over thinker and am concerned about how this may look when she transfers over if bank statements were to be requested. We have nothing to hide and she has 2 holidays to USA every year and the best of everything as my husband is in a well paid job. So her money alone would not cover everything and if she were to have it she would spend it on her collectible figures that she collects without the thought of needing clothing, or budgeting etc. I have opened a joint bank account today with her and my intension was to have her universal credit put into it and transfer a portion of her money into her seperate bank account then the rest towards her cost of living/bills into our account. Or do I continue doing like we have done. I got some info online.
Appointee’s responsibilities
As an appointee you’re responsible for making and maintaining any benefit claims. You must:
sign the benefit claim form
tell the benefit office about any changes which affect how much the claimant gets
spend the benefit (which is paid directly to you) in the claimant’s best interests
Any monies are always spent in her best interest but I just need some guidance.

Hi lollo1
All her Benefits should be paid to you in your position as Appointee. I think as it's a joint account that would count as being paid to you. To whom you pay the Benefits after that will not be scrutinised by the DWP as long as it is done in the best interests of the claimant.
If mistakes are paid and the DWP issues a Civil Penalty then the Appointee has to pay it and not the Benefit claimant.

Thanks David. I’m still confused though about statements showing my monies mixed with my daughters as off the way we are doing it currently. Also is it an issue where you have someone like our daughter who only gets an allowance due to her inability to budget. Obviously we still need to provide her with housing, food, clothing etc so is there an issue with some of her money contributing towards her living cots, do I need to keep every receipt for everything.

I did the same as you when my son turned 16 which was 10 years ago now.
I am his appointee and the joint account we have together is purely for his benefit money and he also has a small amount of paid, supported employment.
This keeps his spends completely separate from ours and all easily accounted for.
When i set up that account with him, appointee bank accounts didn't exist - now they do.
So you could get a special appointee bank account if you wanted to. A few banks do them.

Hi lollo1
No you don't need to keep every receipt. If there was ever an investigation they would ask for bank statements.

Hi Anisty
Thanks for your feedback.
But with any " special " service offered by the banks look out for " hidden " charges.
