Just migrated at end of last year to UC, informed it will stop in August

I have been on ESA for a few years, combined with a severe disability payment and enhanced PIP (thanks to you all I appealed successfully to get this) my pip is ongoing, due a review no earlier than June 2027.

I went through the awful migration to UC at the end of last year. Due to the transistional element I theoretically receive the same monthly amount ( but my local authority considers it income, so there is a court case pending) Due to my age and the rolling date for pensions, to my surprise I will be bumped off UC in August to go onto the state pension! I assume my PIP will still be paid, my disability is lifelong and not expected to suddenly improve.

I have been having trouble trying to access the govt eligibility criteria for pension credit. What are they? As it stands, I believe the state pension will leave me £15 worse off. Things are tight as it is, I’m hoping the court will view the transistional element not to be income, but I’m struggling to pay my council tax as it is.

Any advice would be welcome

Hi carolinekm

There are 2 sets of rules for Council Tax Reduction schemes, Working Age and Pension Age. Usually the latter is more generous but I cannot be specific as each Local Authority is allowed to draw up its own terms and conditions.
You may be eligible for Pension Credit. Have you tried using a Benefits Calculator such as the Age UK one below:-

I ended up calling the DWP because I wasn’t able to cope with their online application, the lady was very nice and she filled in the application for me on the phone. Annoyingly, I won’t know if I’ll get it until just before my state pension starts 🙄😠 not very helpful when you’re trying to work out how you’ll make up the shortfall from UC to state pension

For an approximation go on to a Benefits Calculator.
Make your DOB a year before your real one, and see what it says..

HI Angela

Thanks for that information. I usually use Entitledto.co.uk as a Benefits Calculator.
