Hi,

Indefinite awards replaced what used to be called 'life awards'.

Indefinite awards can be reviewed at anytime if there is evidence that the claimant's needs have changed, although this only happens in around 0.5% of cases.

However, following the budget statement, all current and new claimants of working age will be reassessed by 2013, and from what we understand all current claimants at a later date.

Things are 'sketchy' at the moment, so watch out for updates as and when we get the full facts, we will post them in the forum.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Hi Jim

Just a tad confused by what's written above (nothing new there for me!!) also a point of clarification if I may.

It says above all current and new claimants........reassessed by 2013

then it says "and from what we understand all current claimants at a later date."

What's confusing me is the mention of two "currents claimants" if they've all been reassessed by 2013 why do they need reassessing at a later date?

Also I thought Gideon said that the government will "introduce a medical assessment for Disability Living Allowance from 2013, which will be applied to new and existing claimants."

Hi Gareth,

The press release I received from the DWP was in relation to DLA as follows :

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) was originally designed to give those with severe disabilities extra help so they could live with dignity and independence in their own homes. While we are absolutely committed to supporting vulnerable disabled people, over the last decade the system has become open to abuse and the numbers claiming has steadily increased. In just eight years the numbers claiming DLA have risen by more than half a million.

DLA awards can be decided on the basis of self-reporting of need and, although medical assessments are sought for certain awards, these are not mandatory. We believe support must be offered on the basis of genuine need.

That's why we're taking the decision to reassess everyone of working age on DLA, and ensure everyone in the future goes through a proper gateway to claim the benefit.

The DWP press release following the budget can be found at Fairness and reform at the heart of Budget settlement

Whether or not it's fa

Hope this is of help.

Thanks Jim, if we are to believe the DWP press release then DLA is very easy to claim!!!! As if

So it looks like from what Gideon said yesterday that it's all kicking off after 2013 with the introduction of a new "objective medical assessment".

No doubt the real Liberal Democrats may have something to say about that!!
