I remember there being something in one of the countless coalition press releases about at some time in the future replacing the Social Fund that gives grants and loans with a scheme that gives control of the budget to local authorities and provide people with goods or vouchers wherever possible. However, I haven't seen any date set on it. Maybe someone else can remember more.
Just a point, having advised on Social Fund grants - you tend not to get everything you ask for, so ask for everything you can properly justify asking for. Obviously don't ask for anything you don't need or can't properly ask for under the rules, but think twice before asking for anything less than you really need. It's a bit like DLA - you don't get the best deal you can if you don't give the DWP all the honest information they need to give you the highest award that you are properly entitled to.
