DLA advice please was created by debsy
i recently filled in the ESA form & felt I had filled it in correctly according to online assesment advice. I have now been summoned for a medical, which I am fearful of. I am a lone parent and have my morgage paid by the dss, although i am on IB if my morgage fluctuates & reaches a higher rate of interest then the dss put me back on income support and pay the interest on morgage otherwise i pay it out of my IB. If I fail the medical is the new work related benefit similar to income support whereby they still pay the interest on the morgage or rent etc, I wont become homeless will I?

Also i am on DLA due to my arthritis & fibromyalgia, will this have a knock on effect with my DLA, which is due for renewal in june, eg will they stop my DLA or will the DLA take in to account that I amknow longer on IB and go against me. Please advize.

PS, This is my first post & not used to messaging. can I ask why I have been called for a medical, eg, what was the reason. Thank you Debbie

The provisions that enable you to get housing costs as part of IS also apply to income-related ESA.

The criteria for ESA and DLA are different so that it is possible to get one without the other, and indeed many people do.

However, if your circumstances change, it will be open to the DWP to review your entitlement to any of your benefits and any information gathered in relation to one benefit can be used in relation to another benefit.

To take a simple example, if it were found in relation to an application for DLA that you were able to run a marathon, that information could be used in relation to assessing your ability to mobilise for the purpose of ESA.

As for the medical, you should not assume that being called in for a medical means that you either will or won't get ESA, but rather that the Decision Maker takes the view that they have insufficient information to make a decision without a medical assessment.

Don't forget to read our guides to ESA before going to the medical and remember that you can take someone with you.
