Yes you can. They will need to detail their relationship to you, how often they see you and for how long. If they can, they should relate their comments to the ESA descriptors.

My husband has recieved his ESA form as he is due to be reaassessed in July 2012 and is currently in the Support Group.
My husband has physical and mental problems as a result of a head injury in 1998.
As he is under the care of a Neurologist I have asked his secretary if he would write a letter of support. She has confirmed that the Neurologist is supportive to patients claiming ESA and requested that i should put this in writting and she will forward this onto the Neurologist.
I am not sure what i should request in my letter, but do believe that my husband should be in the Support Group.
I have the Decision Makers letter which confirms he made his decision to put him in Support Group based on my husbands 1998 head injury, do you think i should send a copy to Neurologist?? and what should i ask him to write in his report.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

You need to be cautious about directing what the Consultant writes in case it comes across in any letter he writes as this will detract from how it is seen by the DWP.
The DMs letter only has value if you can show that your husbands condition is the same or worse than it was previously, so this might be one thing to raise with the Consultant.
You could also include a copy of the ESA descriptors, I would suggest both WRAG and SG, rather than just the latter, and asking the Consultant to make their comments in context to any descriptors they feel your husband satisfies.
Don't forget to let them know the timescales you are working to, so that any letter is returned in time for you to send it with the ESA50.
Good luck

Many thanks for your reply.
I have today spoken to the neurologists secretary, who said it is unlikely that he will look at all the descriptors on the ESA50 form as he is very busy.
However, he does write reports on patients problems in his own words,as they are at the time of writting the report, if they are likely to improve and his opinion as to weather the patient is fit enough to work.
I was wondering if anyone out there could advise if this will be sufficient enough for DWP or if anyone has had a good or bad experience in supplying a similliar type of report.
With regards to time scales he mught not get report done intime for the deadline of 28th June to return form by, but DWP has said additional info can be submitted after 28th.
Any advise will be welcome.

Hi,
GP's/Consultants letters can range from excellent to very unhelpful. I often see both at either end of the spectrum together with, in the main, a lot of reasonably good ones. It is impossible to say how good/average/unhelpful any particular consultants letter will be sadly.
It is acceptable to send in the letter after your ESA50 has been sent in, but the sooner the better hopefully before any decision on your claim has been made else one may end up having to await a reconsideration etc.
Pete
