I recently recieved new esa award notice, ( a letter telling me how much benefit i get.) It states an income related amount but says because I am entitled to contribution based ESA i get a different amount? Does this mean my claim is both income and contributory based?

Maybe
Typically what the letter will say is;
you are entitled to x for ESA(IR) you are receiving y for ESA(CB) so you will be paid z for ESA(IR)
z should be equal to x - y.
But to be honest, the simplest thing is to speak to your local DWP office.
If you are receiving ESA(IR) then this should passport you to a range of other benefits, you should have a word with your local CAB for more details.
