My wife is being transferred from IB to ESA (hopefully Support Group) and I’m completing the ESA50 3/11 questionnaire for her as there’s no way she could do it herself. Even with your excellent guides I have struggled with the sheer time it has taken and I’m typing it on the electronic version!
In regard to this I presume you good folk have realised that when you print off the electronic form on single sided A4 paper and add any documents etc, it will not fit into the envelope they provide which they insist you must use to send it back.
The sneaky Sons of Batchelors!!
Anyway, I’m just going through the ESA 50 now and getting it ready to post it tomorrow in time for Monday’s deadline and would ask the following questions:
Do I HAVE to tick one of the yes, no or it varies boxes if I am not exactly sure which one to choose even though I’ve provided detailed information in the use this space panel?
Do they mark on the ‘tick’ or on the description, or on a combination of both?
As I have filled the form for my wife for the reasons above, do I have to complete the section on Page 20 of the questionnaire saying so?
I thank you in anticipation.

Trying to answer your questions in order

With regard to sending the ESA50
ESA50 too big for the envelope
With regard the form, don't allow it to constrain what you need to include. If it is reasonable for you to use the tick boxes on a particular question, then you should do so, but if it is not, then do not, simply explain in the comments section.
If you have completed the questionnaire then you do need to fill in page 20. If you have completed the form based on your wife's own comments then you should make this clear, however, if you have done so without her input, or significant input, then you should explain why you have done this.
I hope this explains it, but if not, or you have further questions, please reply to this thread.

Well the ESA50 has been sent; all trimmed and printed off on double sided paper.
It fitted nicely into the envelope along with the original paper copy of the ESA50 they wanted back. Why would they want that back?
Anyway, my wife has just had confirmation from our Local Authority (LA) that her Blue Badge (BB) is being renewed as she meets the (50m) walking criteria.(not the automatic criteria) The letter of support from her GP used for the BB application was sent with the ESA50.
So, some silly questions!
Do the DWP and LA talk to each other?
Would it be too previous of me to suggest my wife could now qualify for the support group via Question 1 of the ESA50?
And if not, could the BB be used as a precedent or as evidence in any appeal?
Thanks again.

Hi N&W,
I am sure that the DWP and The LA do have avenues of communication. However, I am not confident that they would be used in this scenario.
" she meets the (50m) walking criteria."
" Would it be too previous of me to suggest my wife could now qualify for the support group via Question 1 of the ESA50?"
Just to remind you here that the "Mobilising" descriptors for ESA, include the use of a manual wheelchair unaided, not just walking, see :
WRAG Descriptors :

SG Descriptors :

Thanks to the excellent guides on here, I am aware of the 'mobilising' descriptors in the ESA50.
I (hopefully) covered these in the submition detailing the arthritis in my wife's hands, lack of grip, lack of power in her arms and the amount of pain she would suffer etc in trying to use a wheelchair and similarly a stick.
So if they accept that information, would the BB walking criteria have any bearing?
Or am I being too simplistic?
