esa form physical function or mental was created by reds123
hi we are in the process of filling in the form due to mental health problems and notice questions 6 & 7 communicating with people and question 8 getting around safely in the physical part could apply to my partner as he can not communicate with someone he does not know as he would fail to understand them and may evn switch off during the conversation as he often does due to lack of concentration, and could also become violent if he was approached. should we fill in this part or is it not for mentaly ill people, many thanks dave.

As I understand it, the first section of the ESA50 relates to physical illness only. You need to make the second section of the form work for you in explaining the limitations caused by mental illness.

thats how i understood it to be as well but i am a little confused because i could answer them questions in the physical part with answers relating to the mental part, i just dont want to say that we can comunicate with strangers without the help of another person on one page when i am saying we cant on another page, are we sure the first part physical function will not affect mental illness on the second part. thanks .

I would answer any questions that you feel are relevant. Some mental health problems also have physical symptoms. For example, I have, albeit occasionally, had memory blackouts where I have been in town with friends and have apparently wondered off and woken in an ambulance having collapsed. This doesn't fit the standard diagnosis of my mental health problem but it is how I am affected, so I have included it, after all, the process is supposed to be how you are affected by your health problems not what those health problems are.

First of all, with regard the Mental Health tests, it is acceptable for there to be an underlying physical problem that is causing any limitations.

However, for the physical tests, you need to look at the underlying legislation to see what is acceptable with regard to scoring points.

So for question 6, whilst it is implied that the problem should be the result of physical problems with talking, this is not explicitly stated, so it may be possible to score points for other reasons.

For questions 7 and 8, the phrase "due to sensory impairment" is included, so you will not score points for another reason.

These matters are explained in more detail in our ESA Claim guides.
